Battle of the Bloggers: A Musical Variety Show(down)

Gather round Peoplleaneous,

Before I get into the post, I want you all to know how Truly Fucking Grateful I am for your outpouring of support, encouragement and just straight up being here for me. Completely unsolicited, you gathered ’round me and have kept me buoyed with your incredible show of love for someone who is (mostly) a stranger to you.

You have humbled me and proven me wrong, once again, about the quality of people in this world. I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it – some of the most awesome people on earth have inexplicably gathered in this little corner. And I am a lucky girl for being the recipient of your incredible kindness. Even if I don’t print off that post, I am printing off all of your words to me. You moved me to tears, made me laugh, showed solidarity and made damn sure I don’t feel alone. You rock. And I love you for it. Thank you, endlessly. Thank you.

~

Ahem. Now. About Josh. Before I slay him with music, let me say – in all sincerity – he has a kickass blog over at My Friday Post. Everyone has a few people they have to read, and Josh is one of mine. Good stuff over there, and if you don’t check him out and give him a follow…well, you suck. Go on. Get over there. I’ll wait. (I’m waiting. Fuck’s sake, you’re slow! Oh. There you are. Good. Let’s do this thang.)

As luck would have it, I was planning to do a music post today. I intended to solicit you, my fine feathered peoplleaneous, to assist me with building a playlist. But that will have to wait for another day, because a certain aforementioned someone has just thrown down.

Now. Josh would have you believe he is taking me up on a challenge I issued him.

Josh likes to tell stories.

Big fat whoppers of stories.

He threw shade with a backhanded compliment, like a pro. And when I called him out on it, he challenged me!

Exhibit A: The post that started it all.

Exhibit B: If you dig down in the comments, you’ll see what I’m talkin’ about. And since I don’t want to make you work, let me show you:

“Just saying that was funny. I appreciate your open-minded musical tastes. I don’t know many people with musical tastes as varied as me, you seem to be near that level.” ~Josh

“But Stephanie!,” you exclaim. “He was totally complimenting you!” To which I direct you to that last little piece where he said I’m near his level! Near! He may as well have scraped me off the bottom of his shoe like an unwanted gob of double bubble!

I think we can all agree that was a direct challenge. And I accept! (What? Dude. It totally was! He started it! Just hush and enjoy the show, then!)

This may or may not have been included in my response.

If you haven’t already done it, I suggest you read his “Generic Music Post” before continuing here. (Dudes, even his title is backhanded. Like he doesn’t even consider it a challenge. I see what he’s doing. I SEE!) You gotta check out his musical selection for Round 1 of our duel.

But now it’s my turn. Oh yes. Brace yourselves, because someone’s about to get slayed. And it ain’t gonna be me.

And today on Mixed Metaphors: I’m about to hit a home run, bitches!

Here are some of my favorite listens, also in no particular order:

Alright, folks! That’s the end of Round 1. I guess y’all are supposed to vote or something. And I won’t even bribe you with cookies. (I bake the best cookies. But I’m not bribing you. I don’t need to. But I also bake brownies. And you know what I’m talkin’ about.)

We all know who won Round 1. And hey, Josh? I told ya, homeboy…

  1. Alright, you know I win this one. First of all, Good taste, but I killed you on the variety. Second, and I’m sorry to say this as much as I love Johnny Cash, but the only version of Hurt that should be played is by a band called Nine Inch Nails. You know, the ones who actually wrote the song? Serious props for putting up The Streets though. That is some stuff right there. All good stuff, but I think I win the variety prize hands down. But it’s okay that came in a close second. Don’t feel bad.

    1. HAHAHA! You better back up with that weakass wannabe smack talk. We both know I won that. I killed you on variety! P.S. I love me some nails, alright. But Johnny Cash slayed that song – go ask Trent Reznor what HE thinks about it and get back to me.

I’ll give you credit for variety and beating me to the punch on MY chili peppers. But you need to learn how to accept defeat. It’s okay…I’ve got kleenex and a juice box to help you feel better. 😉

      1. You wish. You had like 3 genres, I had like 12! And your chili peppers? I was watching them on the cheesy UHF MTV Wannabe station in the 80’s as a kid! That’s right, Fight Like A Brave! Great try, though. And I haven’t even really started…. Next week, my frienemy. Next week.

      2. What a bunch of hooey! You throw in one Chopin piece and wanna win the variety show. Pfffft. If I’d thrown my classical at you, you’d have accused me of copying. I know your game, boy, and I beat you at it.

I think you need to reassess, dear. I totally had more variety than you. Also. MY peppers. Get up off ’em.

Frienemy…*snort*…(P.S. Don’t let this go to your head – but you’re fun. Thank you!)

  2. Alright, so points to Josh for choosing Summertime, but c’mon, you’ve got this thing in the bag. I mean, you put the best Warren G song with Modest Mouse? He doesn’t stand a chance. And now I’m really excited for round 2!

    1. That’s what I’m talkin’ about, Shaun! HIGH FIVE! He throws in one classical song and thinks he’ll beat me. HMPH. He’ll get my classical selection soon…and I’ll beat him on that, too!

Thanks for chiming in….I’m having fun with this. I think we all are. 🙂

  3. Ummm..you bake cookies? Do I get one for voting Johnny Cash? Love me the JC, girl…..although disappointed in the George Thorogood…damn spell check…have to look up the song but when on the bike, nothing beats it….hubs would know the name but alas when a girl is up without him…what can I do? And no the answer isn’t bake cookies…..hmmmm….will ponder it….listening to a Coldplay song, the end of a Robert Downey Jr movie….
    The end of a
The movie and shocked and thinking Chips on a shingle, , think it’s Willie Nelson singing Coldplay….nobody said it was it easy….I’ll take me back to the start….right up there with look at the stars, how they shine for you…yeah, they’re singing to me again…On a frigid 32 degree clear night….NYSucks in the winter/fall. At least the music is good….and he did dare you….just saying….

    1. He TOTALLY dared me! Hahaha! thank you!

I love to bake! I just don’t do it often. I think it would be a nice something for me to get back into…I could always pawn all of the baked goods off on the kitchen at work. Make those bitches have a reason to say their hips are fat. 😀

Girl, I do not like Coldplay…but I love me some Willie Nelson!

I wanna be in NY tonight. I spent Thanksgiving there one year, in Manhattan. I loved it so much…but I know it’s different when you spend the entire winter in it. I’d still like to experience a true winter sometime. 🙂

      3. You want to experience a true winter sometime?! Be careful what you wish for, girlfriend! Wait ’til you experience a real Canadian winter!

Cool that you included Johnny Cash in this mix.

  4. The Cash black album is a.ma.zing.

As is the Metallica black album. Hmmm… Not seeing any Metallica on either of your posts. Hunh.

Chevelle. I saw them in a small venue with Death Cab For Cutie (or was Cutie the following week?) back when The Red made radio. They put on a great show, but I gotta say, off-stage their mojo sucked. They had their girlfriends with them, who were all cat-claws and dagger-eyes, which made me REALLY want to buy merch. NOT.

    Anywhoo…

It’s always interesting to learn people’s tastes in music. Thanks for sharing yours. 🙂

    1. Haha! I love me some Metallica – and I’m in total agreement. Black album is the best album.

Gaaahhh, I came so close to being able to catch a Chevelle show live. I bet they were great! Gross at off-stage presence, though…that really blows that they were like that. Ew…

I’m gonna see what Josh throws down on the next round. I think he said sometime next week. Something tells me he’s gonna come at me guns blazing. I need to figure out what I’m gonna whip up next! 😀

  5. Yo – Kanye’s my choice. He is a perfect of example of someone with ‘issues’ who has blossomed with a warm and supportive relationship. Am I complimenting the Kardashians? At least they love each other, even poor Caitlin.
