I made the mistake of telling someone I used to sketch, or play at sketching. Whatever. So now I’m supposed to sketch.
I took art class in junior high school. The art teacher was a coach. Man, he was awesome. When he’d get really pissed at this one guy who was always talking shit, he’d say, “Get the hell outta my class room, you…you…(he so wanted to curse)…BISCUITHEAD!” Biscuithead. I’ll never forget it.
I kinda dug it. Art class, I mean. (Well, outbursts of “biscuithead!,” too.) I did alright – Coach seemed to think I’d be good if I kept at it. One of my mamaws was an artist. Wow, could she draw…and paint…and pretty much anything artistic. She wrote, drew, sewed, gardened, cooked. I always wished I had her talent. But she worked at it, nearly every day. She cultivated and honed her craft.
Me? Once mom said we couldn’t afford art materials, so Coach’s would be my only art class? I stopped. Rarely have I even bothered to pick up a pencil and attempt anything. I do well with most studies when I’m in a structured environment. But doing things just for myself? I’m shit at it.
Couple of times over the years, I’ve picked up a sketchpad and some basic charcoals. Doodled around. I did a weird little cafe scene. I did a grave to work on perspective (I’m so shit at it). I did random inanimate figures. But then I’d quit.
The most recent thing I did was a rat. I was proud of that rat. I was doodling in a notebook while on the phone and drew a rat. He lives in Australia now. I shipped him off in a box of assorted goodies. Anyway. That was a few years ago.
The person who told me I need to pick sketching back up…also used to draw. I pulled a smug face and said I’d refuse to draw anything until he did.
But now I find myself bored at work, and I drew anyway.
I’m terrible at finding sketch ideas. I don’t do well coming up with them on my own. So I googled sketches or faces or sketchy faces or some shit and got some ideas. So this guy is mostly a copy. I dunno. The point was just to put pencil to paper. So I grabbed a pad of paper and a pencil (Black Warrior, baby!) and drew this guy.
The Cowardly Lion? The Unabomber? I dunno. But he’s sketchy as fuck. I do like his eyebrows.
I’m the same but everyth I’ve done since school I’ve just never completed. It kinda sucks. I loved drawing. I was always inspired then and I was pretty good. Oh well

I don’t have the time and dedication I did in art class but I can try

Hey, I hear ya. If I wasn’t having a slow day here at work, I probably wouldn’t have bothered – if it even crossed my mind. But it felt pretty good doing it, and I don’t even much care how I feel about the outcome. Nice change of attitude for me.

I like him… He looks quizzical! I gave up studying art because I just can’t draw people. Not unless they have some weird cartoon features. And besides, the models were never very attractive!!

Ha! Thank you! And I love that word…quizzical.
I could never draw people, either. I think I’m gonna embrace that and do them cartoony if I continue.

I dig it! I was never a drawing child. I was a writing child. I couldn’t draw a stick figure to save my life. I was always jealous of the drawing children and now I’m jealous of the drawing adults. You are a good drawing adult. *nods solemnly*

Aw thank you, Aidan! I actually wasn’t a drawing child. I’ve never been one to just draw. I would doodle during class, but that was just sheer boredom breaking through. But when I had to choose an elective and saw art was a choice, I was drawn to it. Maybe I’ll give it a go again.
I was a writer, too…but even then, I didn’t cultivate it like I should have. I read more than anything – devouring others’ art, you know?
Seriously..thank you 🙂

Personally, I like the drawing (For some reason, I hear Mike Myers from SNL doing his “I’m Simon and I like drawrings….” skit), and I think it looks like he is about to come up with a brilliant scheme.
I always thought I hated drawing, and then in college I had a drafting class and the instructor used suggestions from “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” and it did wonders for me…
…and then, I never drew again.

HA! Good one – and thank you.
I’m gonna have to check out “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” now!

It’s a good book. It kind of has you look at things from perspectives you may not have considered before.

You did better then me at art, and I’m actually meant to be good at it lol. I failed because I just wanted to copy Simpsons characters in art. Scratch that, I’m not an artist, I’m a master plagarist (I copy already existing pictures and can sometimes shove things together to make something somewhat creative).

Dude, that sounds just like me. I’m such shit at coming up with my own ideas to draw. And I can’t visualize well enough to draw…unless I have something to look at. It’s frustrating. But eh. Fuck it.
And Simpsons art is cool!

He is sketchy! I dig his brows, too!
I used to art too. I found if you stop sketching, it takes more sketching to get back to how good you used to be 😦 At least with portraits. I used to purloin the Playboys and do the nudes. My art teacher had the disposition of an artist, the white hair of a wild man, and the personality of the absent-minded professor. He was hellacool, terribly talented, and I sought his praises without any sense of pride. ❤ A good teacher is such a gift.
